QEMU King's Quest VII (1994) -- From Install to Play in 15 Mins
Sierra On-Line King's Quest VII (1994) fully preserved and playable from start till the ending in QEMU virtual machine without any mods or patches for earlier version that was only shipped in Windows version. For playing this masterpiece on modern machine, the usual recommendation is to obtain Sierra On-Line patch to version 2.00b and use the DOS version in DOSBox. However, version 2.00b also has several cut features from earlier version 1.4/1.51.
QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx alleviated all the patching requirement with simple Install and Play right off the ripped CD image, in high quality digitized sound effects from AC97 and MIDI playback from Roland GS software synthesizer licensed by Microsoft DirectX through the OS WDM Audio kernel streaming. There is never about the **\*Accuracy BS\*** of SoundBlaster emulation. QEMU featuring qemu-3dfx also introduces SDL2 hardware cursor support with seamless pointer integration, perfect for any 2D point-and-click adventures without any mouse lag frustration. The game 640x480 resolution can be easily up-stretched to ANY higher resolution in 4:3 aspect ratio on any modern display panel.
The version of the game as 1.51 has been tested in playthrough on QEMU virtual machine in TCG. Despite the known & documented firecracker speed bug, the game can be finished without any slow-down mechanism. Just keep trying when the firecracker exploded. In one or two trials, Queen Valanice will eventually make it to place the firecracker into the tomb locker in Chapter 5.
The game serves as the demo for many similar 2D point-and-click adventure or RTS games. Many are simply superb in their Windows version compared to their DOS counter-part. Any recommendation to always favors the DOS version no longer hold. And, period-correct PC boxes for playing the superior Windows version has just become the JOKE of the DAY for anyone just wanted to have FUNs with Good Old Games.
