The best way to uncover hazards is to do an inspection. There are many different types of inspections, from thorough reviews to quick scans.
Everyone should get into the habit of doing quick visual surveys of any area they walk or drive into. No matter where you work – an office, machine shop, factory, hospital, home, garage, basement – every place can have safety obstacles.
There are many things to look for during an inspection. This short safety training video gives several suggestions on what to look for when doing a quick visual survey of a work area.
Work areas should have two exits clearly marked, clearly visible, and they must be unblocked, unlocked and clear outside the door.
Fire extinguishers must be charged, mounted and unobstructed.
Mats and/or carpeting must not have any flaws or upturned edges that could cause slips, trips, or falls.
Spills or wet spots can also cause a slip, trip and fall.
