Theme Park is a theme park management/construction game developed and initially published by Bullfrog in 1994 for MS-DOS, Commodore Amiga, and the Panasonic 3DO. The game would go on to be ported to almost every major system of the 1990s. In the game, players are given a plot of land, and a starting set of rides and attractions, and must research and expand their theme park while trying to be financially successful. As players make money and flesh out their park, they can then buy more parks around the world, and essentially build a theme park empire. Despite the theme park, uh, theming, the game is an economic simulation first, and a theme park game second. In "full simulation" mode, players have to compete with other theme parks, manage the stock market, adjust prices, and negotiate with staff members to avoid strikes. Graphically, the game looks good. The pixel art aesthetic works well here, and there's even pre-rendered CGI videos that allow you to "ride" the rides. Sound design is lacking, however. The sounds and music here are fine, but there's very little of it, letting the park feel too quiet or empty at times. Overall this is a solid title, though later games like Roller Coaster Tycoon greatly refined the formula, for a better balance between creativity and business management. The game is still easily available in its MS-DOS format on GOG.com.
