It's been a while since I got to read a new Brandon Graham book. I still feel it's an absolute travesty his Prophet run hasn't been collected into big huge deluxe books, considering the pedigree of talent that was involved on that book.
Rain Like Hammers is his latest scifi story that takes us to some pretty Brandon Graham- like locales, and that is exactly what I was hoping it would do. Crazy crowded space age cityscapes, colorful alien worlds of bizarre flora and fauna, and plenty of punnage and wordplay littered throughout the story, which like I said, was to be expected, considering the author.
The story felt much more personal than some of his other works, and nowhere near as weird as Multiple Warheads was, which I thought veered into being weird just for the sake of weirdness.
I felt a bit of a tonal shift as the story progresses and the main cast take their places in the story. There's a very palpable air of loneliness at the beginning that recedes as the story reaches its conclusion, but in the afterword the author mentioned this comic was his way of excising a lot of negativity, and I can believe it. Good for him for getting that out of his system and gifting us yet another unique and creative story to entertain with!
