The Wrenchies- Magic and machines help kids after the apocalypse!
Any time people get me talking comics, at some point or other I always bring up the Wrenchies.
It has a lot of genre elements I enjoy wrapped up in a crazy surreal epic story. You've got the ruined landscapes of the future, with gangs of kids fighting demons on a quest to save the world. You've got warriors being summoned from alternate realities as they travel through dimensions fueled by the power of comic books.
The various unrelated stories eventually wind themselves together in a twisted convoluted mess that does manage to tie together a lot of the loose ends.
I can see how this book could scare some off. It's dense, the art can look cluttered on some of the darker pages, there's piles of exposition that seem to lead nowhere, characters can disappear off panel with only a throwaway caption mentioning it... but for me it all clicks.
I was correct in remembering that this also ties in with Dalrymple's other book "Proxima Centauri," if you dig all the complicated story points.
