Remembering George Foreman and His Iconic Grill
7Let's go back to the 90's and the 2000's and remember legendary boxer George Foreman and his iconic "George Foreman Grill" TV commercials and informercials.
George Foreman was a two time heavy weight boxing champion. In the 1990s, after his final retirement from boxing, he signed a deal with Salton Gourmet Appliance Company to promote their new Cooking Grill and he became a TV Commercial Icon. It ended up being called George Foreman's Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine! He had already done ads and promos for the car repair company Meineke. George Foremans Meinke ads were everywhere too. His television ads and TV Commercials for the George Foreman Grill aired constantly in the nineties and the 2000s. Print ads were also done for Newspapers and magazines. And he promoted the Grill on many daytime shows like Good Morning America, late night talk shows like the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and later on Jay Leno, and he did the Late Show with David Letterman as well.
The George Foreman Grill became a pop culture icon, just like the man who promoted it. It was referenced and parodied in many television shows like The Office, NBC's 30 Rock, Mike Judge's King of the Hill, and Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh where they parodied it with Different Stroke's Gary Coleman replacing Ad Icon George Foreman. And the grill evolved, eventually it came in different sizes and colors, with interchangeable cooking plates etc.
George Foreman passed away late this March, and he left behind a huge legacy in both the realm of sports and of advertising. He was a sports icon, and advertising icon, a food icon, a salesman and a pitchman. George Foreman, his boxing exploits, and his nostalgic George Foreman Grill commercials will be remembered for years to come!
