Batman Forever - The Batman Returns Controversy
Let's explore the controversies surrounding Batman Returns, which were the events that led to the much lighter and commercial movie "Batman Forever".
When Batman Returns launched in 1992 it was met with much controversy from "concerned" parents who found the movie to be too dark and violent. Some examples are the scene when Penguin bites a man's nose, and Catwoman and her many dark moments like her origin story scene. Many companies who make tie-ins like Kenner and McDonalds were concerned with the movies dark tone as well. This is the reason why DC and Warner Bros decided to go in a different direction for the third movie, to avoid losing licensing partners and merchandise sales and box office success as well.
Batman Forever was a much more family friendly movie. It was directed by Joel Schumacher instead of Tim Burton, and starred Val Kilmer instead of Michael Keaton. It was a more commercial and silly movie and therefore there were many tie-ins and merchandise like the McDonalds glassware mugs, the action figures by Kenner (Hasbro), statues and figurines by applause, the sticker album, books, comic books, clothing and apparel, the soundtrack and score and much more.
