I tend not to appreciate strategy games, for the simple reason that I suck at them. However, there are a few turn-based ones which rank among my favorite games of all-time, such as the first three installments in the innovative Might & Magic spin-off series "Heroes of Might & Magic". HOMM's extremely addictive gameplay mechanics (exploration, turn-based battles & resource management) are remarkably easy to learn, but the campaign missions and stand-alone scenarios can still get very challenging on the higher difficulty settings.

HOMM2 and HOMM3 in particular refined the concept, but the original game has its very own charm. For one thing, it belongs to the last generation of DOS games, and sports some pretty high-res graphics. Also, the storybook-like art design differs somewhat from the slightly toned-down, less colorful style of its successors. While not quite having the full operatic grandeur of HOMM2's soundtrack, the music is pretty good too.

If you don't own a (legal) copy of HOMM1, you may be interested to know of the very reasonable 5,99$ price tag over at Good Old Games:
