Repella Fella - Game Review

Hello, fellow gamers! Welcome back to "Veteran Game" - your number one spot for in-depth reviews. Today, we'll be looking at "Repella Fella," a game that brings the spirit of "South Park" and "Ciggy Butt Brain" to an interactive, point-and-click adventure. Developed by the solo artist Misadventurous, this game is unapologetically Australian, rich with style and personality. It's not for everyone, but it's definitely my cup of tea.

Our journey begins in the 1960s, following a war-veteran turned pest exterminator who inadvertently gets trapped in a survival capsule during a townwide emergency. After what he believes is a 15-year stint underwater, he emerges to a startling discovery - Australia, now blanketed in snow and occupied by Russian and American military forces. With this compelling setup, you'll experience the story from three different characters, each playing an integral part in the narrative.

The mechanics in "Repella Fella" are familiar for an adventure game. You'll interact with items, characters, solve puzzles, and make decisions to drive the story forward. Occasionally, you might find the gameplay weighed down by fetch quests, but generally, the pacing is well executed. Interesting enough, the game automatically uses collected items when necessary, which streamlines the gameplay significantly. However, the lockpicking aspect, which turns out to be a guessing game, could use a bit more spice.

A key component of "Repella Fella" is its dialogue and consequential choices that influence the narrative. You'll get to decide how to handle various situations, some of which can turn hilariously violent, contributing to the dark humor of the game. What's even more intriguing is that there's no 'wrong choice' - you're always put back to decide again.

Regrettably, the ending feels like a hook for a sequel rather than a closure, which is a bit of a letdown, given that a follow-up game isn't guaranteed. Still, the journey leading up to it is worth every moment.

The humor in "Repella Fella" is a class of its own. The Aussie larrikin approach might not appeal to everyone, but if you're like me and enjoy this style of comedy, you'll have a great time. The Australian slang, the 'C-bombs', and the excellent voice acting all work together to create an authentic and engaging atmosphere.

The game's visuals take a page from adult cartoons, blending post-apocalyptic and futuristic elements in an intriguing depiction of Australia. From a town dedicated to pavlovas to one housing a giant killer wombat, the details are a joy to discover. The quality of the animations is truly commendable, often resembling an animated TV show. However, distinguishing characters can be a bit challenging due to similar designs.

All things considered, "Repella Fella" is a deep dive into Australian culture that strikes the right chord with its target audience. Its unique blend of humor, personality, and interactive gameplay makes for an experience I thoroughly enjoyed, despite a less satisfying ending. I'm certainly hoping for a sequel because this is a world I'd love to revisit.

And with that, folks, it's time to wrap up this review. As always, stay tuned for more game reviews, and keep gaming! Catch you in the next one!
