Escape Academy: Escape from the Past - Game Review

Hey there, fellow gamers, and welcome back to the Veteran Game channel! Today, we're diving into the second major DLC for "Escape Academy: Escape from the Past", the brainchild of Coin Crew Games, known for their immersive escape room scenarios.

Taking us back to the origins of the Escape Academy, we rejoin familiar characters Solange and Eel in their youthful days. Quickly, we're hurled into our first Escape, where things go south with a plot to assassinate the Academy's headmaster. It's our mission to unravel this mystery.

Throughout the game, you're faced with various escape scenarios revolving around the prime suspects. The gameplay stays true to the roots of Escape Academy, tasking us to solve puzzles, decipher codes, and find lock combinations. A ticking clock heightens the pressure, but you can ask for a time extension if you're close to breaking free. The hint system is back too, offering cryptic tips for puzzle progression. But be warned, using hints or time extensions can knock your final grade, so if you're aiming for that flawless A+, you'll need to rely on your wits alone.

But worry not, as this DLC seems a tad more manageable compared to the more demanding "Escape from Anti-Escape Island" DLC and the base game. Yes, the countdown timer and extensive escapes create a tense atmosphere, but seasoned Escape Academy veterans should be able to tackle the puzzles of Escape from the Past with relative ease.

Whether the timer feels more generous or the puzzles have become more intuitive with practice remains ambiguous. Despite this easier feel, the game retains its fun, offering diverse puzzles that encourage thorough exploration and ensuring tasks are fair and organic. More often than not, the challenge lies not in understanding the task at hand but in figuring out the solution.

In this DLC, you're revisiting familiar spaces from the original game, albeit altered in decor and clues. Playing as Solange adds a nice layer of nostalgia for the fans. However, the familiarity of the puzzles rooms may make the game feel less fresh than its predecessor, "Escape from Anti-Escape Island". Despite this, the grand finale of the murder-mystery puzzle is a high point, requiring you to piece together evidence in a Poirot-like fashion, with an added sprinkle of Escape Academy's unique puzzle charm. It brings a fresh twist to the DLC and distinguishes it from the main game.

In conclusion, "Escape from the Past" is a delightful slice of escape room entertainment that lives up to the quality, variety, and balanced puzzle-solving experience we've come to expect from Coin Crew Games. While it may seem easier than previous editions, the puzzles will undoubtedly leave you scratching your head for a while. The satisfying climax of the murder mystery leaves you in the driving seat, offering a distinct vibe despite its familiarity, making this DLC a must-play for all Escape Academy fans. Until next time, game on!
