The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom - Game Review

Greetings, fellow gamers! Today we dive into the realm of The Elder Scrolls Online with their seventh Chapter release, Necrom, which launched on June 5th. This latest addition brings a fascinating new class called the Arcanist into the mix - the first of its kind since the Necromancer from Elsweyr in 2019. I've eagerly delved into the Arcanist's unique mechanics, and I can't wait to share my thoughts. But that's not all - we also have two new zones, Telvanni Peninsula and Apocrypha, a duo of companions, Azandar and Sharp-As-Night, and a fresh 12 player trial called Sanity’s Edge.

In the storyline, players take on the role of an agent of the Daedric Prince Hermaeus Mora, tasked with investigating a peculiar threat that jeopardizes both Nirn and Oblivion. I dove right in with a brand new Arcanist character, whom I lovingly named Green Trianglez, in honor of the class's signature green triangular rune magic. The Arcanist, like other classes, possesses a DPS Magicka skill line, a tank skill line, and a healing skill line.

One striking aspect of the Arcanist is its resource mechanic known as the Crux System. It involves using certain spells to generate Crux which can then be spent in various ways with other spells. The Arcanist's magic has this tranquil green glow, and the sound effects accompanying it are incredibly satisfying. After several dungeon runs as both a healer and DPS, I found myself gravitating towards the former. The healing mechanics, especially the shield-providing Curative Runeforms, are enjoyable and engaging.

Exploring the two new zones was a treat. The Telvanni Peninsula and Apocrypha present an array of captivating side quests, incredible locales, and fascinating NPCs. The Telvanni, with their ruthless and savage nature, were particularly thrilling. Meanwhile, Apocrypha's grand buildings composed of books and tomes, shrouded in a green haze, offers a surreal and impressive landscape.

This Chapter also introduces new companions, and I got to experience the quest to obtain Sharp-As-Night. The companions feature, introduced back in Blackwood in 2021, offers NPCs that fight by your side, with skill lines, armor, and rapport levels. Sharp-As-Night's storyline was both engaging and heartrending, and I'm eager to continue building rapport to further develop it.

Without venturing too far into spoiler territory, the main story takes an unexpected twist when we find out that the Prince of Secrets, Hermaeus Mora, has wiped the Daedric Prince Ithelia from everyone's memory, including other Princes! The story ends on a massive cliffhanger, and I'm excited to see how it unravels in future updates.

While Necrom provides a wealth of new content, what truly shines for me is the Arcanist class. The aesthetic appeal and the immersive mechanics of the class make for an addictive dungeon running experience. In essence, Necrom has reinforced my love for The Elder Scrolls Online and its blend of single-player immersion and MMO complexity.

Necrom, in my opinion, is a must-try for any ESO enthusiast. The Arcanist class, the new zones, the engaging quests, and the fresh companion, Sharp-As-Night, have all delivered a fantastic gaming experience. And while we wait with bated breath to see where the future updates lead us, there's plenty to explore and enjoy in the fantastical world of Necrom. So, fellow adventurers, let's gear up, summon our companions, and step into the new realms that await us in The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom. Until next time, happy gaming!
