Repton 2 Caverns Part 1
Tim Tyler's masterpiece, Repton 2, has a reputation as one of the hardest games of its day simply because of the amount that has to be done without error, with no way to save your progress. However, the puzzles are, for the most part, not that hard when compared to the standard set by later games in the series. Superior Interactive's PC remake of Repton 2 adds to the game a level editor and the welcome feature of savepoints, thus paving the way for new scenarios with much more fiendish puzzles. James Watson's Caverns was the first of these to be designed, and is packaged together with the Repton 2 game (http://www.superiorinteractive.com/repton/2.htm).
In terms of structure, Caverns groups its levels into seven "chains", each reached through one of the transporters at the bottom. There is no fixed order in which the chains must be tackled, but it helps to start with the ones that lead to the release of spirits or unblocking the key. In this video I complete the shortest chain, containing only Level 3, and start the second, containing Levels 15, 13, 2 and 19. The latter is one of two chains that must be completed to unblock the key.
The majority of Caverns levels contain a midway savepoint, allowing the player to explore and save after completing each part of the level, though you must be careful not to save over your progress if you might have made a move that makes the level as a whole impossible to complete. Level 13 is one of these, and this video breaks off on reaching the savepoint for the first time. The only thing you need to remember for next time is that I blocked off the bottom-right cage, allowing the only spirit that's free at this point to enter the cage close to the savepoint.
A small technical note: the reason I have not uploaded any videos of PC Repton 2 (or 1) before now is that these games don't seem to cooperate well with the recording software I use. Fortunately, I now have a new computer (her name is Natsuki and she says hi) with much more memory, enough that I was able to get round this problem by recording the videos uncompressed (the Level 15 segment used up 1.5 GB!) and compressing them afterwards.
The music for this video is taken from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
