The leader of the Respect Party has defended her decision not to take part in a standing ovation for a decorated Royal Marine. Lance Corporal Matt Croucher was awarded the George Cross for for throwing himself onto a grenade in Helmand in 2008 to save his colleagues. However, at a meeting of Birmingham City Council, Salma Yaqoob and a fellow Respect Party Councillor refused to take part in a standing ovation for the marine.
