Retro Flashback: Re-Volt (PC)
In this episode of Retro Flashback, I take a look at Re-Volt for the PC. This is a game that has a devoted cult following which calls me among its members. It's a great arcade racing game that combines ideas from Mario Kart and RC Pro-Am with its own special ideas into something truly unique among other titles in the genre. It's brutally difficult but the core ideas are so much fun, I don't even care that it's something I'll probably never finish it. This is a true racing gem not to be missed.
Re-Volt was available for digital purchase through GOG but was delisted due to a dispute between the current holders of the Re-Volt IP (We Go Interactive) and a group of fans who have written a patch to make the game run on modern systems, among many other improvements. There is no word on when or if this dispute will be resolved but when it is, I will update this description. If you can find the original CD for this game, the fan patch is available for free from http://rv12.revoltzone.net/ and does an exceptional job of modernising a game that already holds up quite well. It was also released in retail form for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast, though I cannot vouch for the quality of those conversions.
