Retro Flashback: NAM-1975 (Neo-Geo)
In this episode of Retro Flashback, I take a look at NAM-1975 for the Neo-Geo. This is the last in my "quadfecta" of Neo-Geo launch titles that were available at my local arcade. This is the first ever title for the Neo-Geo and is the only one that doesn't feature the iconic flipping text system attract screen. This is clearly where SNK put their "A team" as it is full of voice, lots of additional artwork, a fairly deep and dark narrative in arcade game terms and even had good localisation. NAM-1975 has a weird difficulty curve like many Neo-Geo titles and is most certainly best played co-op but is a solid, challenging rail shooter that does reward repeated play. You can clearly see the inspirations for the Metal Slug series that would come many years later in this.
Programming Note: I'm between microphones right now so my commentary sound quality isn't as good. Fear not, it'll improve notably very soon.
NAM-1975 is available for digital purchase on the Wii Virtual Console which can be accessed through the Wii Shop Channel.
