The head of the Royal Navy is warning that Britain must have aircraft carriers if it is to remain an effective global power.

Addressing the Royal United Services Institute, First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, said the ability to project air power from the sea remains an essential component of a country's capacity to wield influence around the world.
