Hey everyone! In this RPG Maker Let's Play, Studio Blue comes full circle with a look at The Underground. This game is by Bubuhotep, the very first developer we ever critiqued.

Bubuhotep continues to show that he understands the concept of atmosphere, which is essential in a horror game. To that end, The Underground excels. The location looks and feels genuinely creepy, and the music really ramps up the tension. There could be more atmospheric sounds, but that can be done when the game is polished.

We had two main issues: The design of a chase area (that we couldn't get past) and the characterizations.

The second chase area is a tight corridor of diagonal tiles with the monster right behind you at full speed. Because of that, it becomes extremely difficult to get through, especially with a keyboard. There are three ways to fix this: (1) Widen the critical path, (2) Make the monster wait half a second before beginning to chase, and (3) Make the monster pause at the half-way point for a half-second to roar. #1 is paramount, and #2 and #3 will help so much (half a second can make all the difference in the world.)

The characters, unfortunately, need so much reworking. They come across as stereotypical horror movie victims so blatantly that they are unlikable. Without that empathy connection, we won't be worried about them. We offer extensive advice on how to create a connection with the characters near the end of the video, and we hope it helps Bubuhotep.

Speaking of the end of the video... the announcement at the end will go into greater detail, but this is our final game critique video. Starting in 2020, Studio Blue will be moving more to live streaming, for entertainment and development purposes.
