Samsung Galaxy S24: Hands-on preview
20After an unwelcome S23 price bump, Samsung has taken steps to bring the cost back down with the S24. Sure, it’s not as cheap as the S22 at launch but the 128GB S24 is £50 cheaper than the equivalent S23 while the 256GB S24 is £40 cheaper than last year’s model.
At a glance, the S24 is near-identical to last year’s S23, with an “armour aluminium” frame sandwiched between layers of Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Beneath that glass sits the same FHD Dynamic AMOLED 2X-type display too - but - thanks to thinner bezels, that screen is slightly larger than last year at 6.2, rather than 6.1-inches. In addition, there’s LTPO tech now too, offering a 1 to 120Hz variable refresh rate and brightness now tops out at 2,600 nits.
Flipping the phone over we’re met with a trio of rear cameras: a 50-megapixel main lens, which Samsung claims absorbs 160% more light than its predecessor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide and a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto. Samsung’s “Space Zoom” extends the S24’s overall reach to 30x through digital cropping.
As for internals, the S24 reverts to Samsung’s own Exynos 2400 “For Galaxy” chipset. This isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker but historically Exynos chips have underperformed compared to their Qualcomm counterparts. The chipset is joined by 12GB of RAM and your choice of 128GB or 256GB of storage.
The S24 will run Android 14 and Samsung’s own One UI 6.1 out of the box, and Samsung has confirmed that users can expect to receive seven years worth of both security and OS updates.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 starts at £799 for the 128GB model, running up to £859 for the 256GB variant.
