The discussion in the gaming industry regarding inclusivity and representation is one marked with a great deal of controversy: each step you take seems almost guaranteed to draw fire from every side. More than that, much of the discussion seems to ignore the practical realities that developers must contend with. It’s difficult to know how much focus on the topic is appropriate, or whether there are risks – both creative and financial – that accompany going too far. Until recently, David headed up one of the creative teams at BioWare EA – a developer well-regarded for the inclusivity of its hit role-playing games – and he’ll walk you through some of the challenges and mistakes his team faced over the last seventeen years, as well as impart some practical guidelines which may be of use to more than RPG developers.
