Should Christians Engage in Debate?
49Are debates sinful? Some have argued (mainly based on Romans 1) that debating is sinful. They will also argue that debates are not profitable. Some have even argued that Christians should not be involved in debate while not even realizing that they are actually engaging in debate! They are advancing anti-debate apologetic arguments, which is in fact apologetics!
What is the real truth about debates? Can debates be profitable? And when does debating become sinful? Pastor Tommy McMurtry and Donny Budinsky discuss these questions.
1 Peter 3 says we are called to defend the faith and have a defense for the hope that is in us. This is where we get “apologetics” from. We are called to defend the faith, and to uphold the truth of God's Word.
2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to cast down imaginations or destroy arguments that are against the knowledge of God. This can be done while engaging critics in professional debate. We are also told to contend for the faith. Paul debated. He contended for the faith. In Acts 9, we are told that Paul disputed with the Grecians. This is Paul essentially debating with them. How then can debate be a bad thing? Paul wrote Romans 1. This is the chapter people who are against debates look to as a means to argue against debating. But why would Paul be condemning that which he is doing as he defends the one true God against skeptics?
Debate is not sinful when it is done in a professional manner. Debate is best done when it doesn’t become contentious. Debate is not sinful. But strife is. We are told to not be consumed with debate. For example, if 2 people agree to a debate in a professional setting, this is not sinful. This is akin to 2 fighters agreeing to fight in a boxing ring. This is called a fight, but it is not the same as a street fight.
We are told to give an answer to everyone who asks. And in doing this, we may often have to debate. But debate does not have to become contentious or cause strife. It can be done in a cordial (yet adamant) and professional manner.
