It's not that you shouldn't take shortcuts, you shouldn't be focusing on fast tracking your success. The experience you gain along the way is vital to your long term success. The longer you work, the more you'll gain when things finally start working out. It allows you to consolidate on those advantages more effectively.
It's frustrating when success doesn't seem to be in sight but try to embrace the experience of working on your craft. If it's something you enjoy then just keep doing it like you normally would. It'll all come around, you'll see.
