In 2010, former Infinity Ward President and CEO Jason West and Vince Zampella were escorted from their offices after an argument with Activision. Signing several of their Call of Duty creative team, they started Respawn Entertainment. With plenty to prove, they hoped to compete with multiplayer juggernauts like Halo and Gears of War, but as a new studio, their budget was limited. Scrapping single player, they focused their efforts on a multiplayer-only title, Titanfall.
Mech-piloting parkour soldiers and dedicated servers impressed and sold plenty of Xbox Ones to the multiplayer community, but they wanted more from this sci-fi-title-that-could. Thankfully, profits from Titanfall enabled the young studio to expand. The Respawn team was split between multiplayer development and the titan-spankin' new single player campaign, including former Call of Duty and NCIS writer, Jesse Stern. Together they focused on the bond between pilot and Titan and the needy shouts of a narrative-starved community.
Respawn also announced Titanfall 2 would no longer be Xbox exclusive, reaching a much larger audience by adding PS4 and PC. Their already impressive servers were strengthened with additional cloud-based and physical servers and the studio hopes competition will grow with the help of a new squad-inspired matchmaking system called Networks. Did someone say e-sports? I think Respawn wants someone to say e-sports.
