Sky Target - Sega Saturn - Intro & secret plane XF/A-49 “White Sword” longplay [1080p 60fps]
Full longplay / playthrough / walkthrough / trueplay of Sky Target as the hidden plane, the final boss XF/A-49 “White Sword”. Where to begin when discussing this Saturn port of the Model 2 arcade game, well to start with this is a classic case of out source development going wrong, badly wrong. AM1 who handled the arcade game, gave the porting duties to Appaloosa Interactive. In all likelihood this was a quick turn around port done in a few months to earn Appaloosa Interactive and Sega some money. Sega and AM1 oversaw the port, so they are as much to blame for the end result as Appaloosa Interactive.
What we got is one of the worst looking 3D games on the system, that by all accounts looks to be using a 256 colour pallet. The in-game rendered arcade intros and attract mode have been replaced by True Motion video using the Saturn graphics engine?! The voice audio is poorly mixed and sounds distorted as the volume level set for it is way too loud. The 3D models and textures look awful and the frame rate for the 3D elements seem to alter between 15fps to 30fps at the drop of the hat. Only the plane selection menu seems to hold a stable 30fps the rest of the game runs closer to 20fps, while the HUD and 2D elements update closer to 60fps. Terrible mesh effects all over the place and the mid mission cutscenes feature what can only be described as a 2D blurmonge for the pilot image, compared to the 3D model seen in the arcade version.
Fair to say it's a toss up, between The House of the Dead and Sky Target for worse Model 2 port on Saturn. With all that said Sky Target is part of the After Burner series and the gameplay on the Saturn version holds up as does the rock and roll soundtrack. If you like After Burner you will like Sky Target, just so long as you don't mind the fact this port looks like a dogs dinner. It's does have some nice gameplay features however, such as the mission choice as you move through the campaign and the huge bosses seen at the end of every level. The Saturn version also allows you to play as the final boss the White Sword if you 5 star every mission in ranking mode. For this full playthrough / longplay / trueplay Randomised Gaming dug up our save file with the final boss unlocked.
Also known as: スカイターゲット (Japan) Sky Target Daredevil Air Force (Full title)

Sky Target's only other home port was the Japanese Windows 95 PC release, which is based on the Sega Saturn version but includes a smoother frame rate and higher resolution support. While it was never released outside of Japan on PC this version is very cheap to pick up, but it is unlikely to work on modern operating systems. One youtuber has captured some footage from the PC release if you want to compare versions yourself here: https://youtu.be/H_ftehOHe6M
