SMW Custom Level - The Frozen Palace
Info: Week 2 of hacking and I feel more confident about it again compare to designing my most recent level uploaded. (Though I don't think I did too bad now that I think about it.) For this level the ideas kind of just came to me section by section. So this level takes place in Area 12: The Frozen Lands, in which we find out the cause of why everything is freezing up in this level. This was also the last level that needed to be finish within this Area so now it's complete (Minus the boss.) So...I had already started working on this level awhile ago but I didn't like how it was turning out. The design kind of seemed all over the place with no focus and it felt a lot like like I was just adding tiles. So I cleared the level in started over and now I'm more satisfied with how it turned out. This level features a tile set that I ripped for last years C3, though it's also merged with different graphics in this level.
The first & last part of the level is pretty self explanatory. (They're both on the same level.) Has quite a bit of spiked ceilings as well as parts where you need to push the crates, though I tried not to make it to where you had to push it for too long. Other then that, not really much else to explain about this section as you can pretty much see what it's about.
The second part of the level has a bit more too it. It for one isn't too straight forward and there's quite a few areas to explore (Which I didn't in this video.) The melting ice blocks returns for a second time within this world as well as the air meter. The ice block parts aren't too bad though and I made sure once again that you didn't have to travel too far back if you lost the fire flower. The water sections however can be pretty harsh. Also features a new enemies to the Super Mute World Series, Bucket Head which they are pretty simple but I still like them.
Overall this level is probably pretty difficult but not as much as I made it out to be. The main reason why I probably even got hit so much has to due with the fact that I'm playing on Key Board which I'm no good at that. Not only that but this level is a slippery one, so merging that plus playing with a Key Board just made it a hell of a time for me. I had absolutely no control which often resulted in me running into an enemy. That and I have trouble doing vine jumps as well as jumping out of the water. Maybe I just need to set my controls up better but yeah it's really difficult testing levels in this condition. Well at first there were a lot of glaring issues when it came to testing but I fixed all the of them.....or so I thought. The bucket head that's near the area of the third dragon coin....never occurred to me that he's in a bad position if you're coming from the left side. It took about an hour to test this level to be honest and that's because every time I found an big error I'd have to retest the level again. (Too lazy to set spawn points.)
Anyways comments and feedback are always appreciated as I'd really like to hear your thoughts.
