SMW Custom Level - Fiery Castle
Info: Well I learned that designing levels overall seems to go a lot better when I'm not trying to finish a level. If that didn't make since, I basically mean how I've been trying to get all the levels finished lately. When actually try hard to finish a level, it makes it seem like rushed effort and brings the quality of the level down. So I've been trying to refrain from doing that lately and just been trying to take my time with designing the levels and not worry as much. Still concerned with releasing this at C3 but I don't want to risk the remaining of the levels not having the same quality as the rest of the levels in this hack.
Anyways, I thought I'd get an early start at starting the final world which is only 4 levels long. (Including the final level of the hack.) The final world doesn't really have a theme to it. All I know is that it takes place on a floating island. Despite the graphics, this level isn't actually a mid-fortress or a fortress in this world but just a level itself. Based on the name of the level, you can basically tell what the level is about, loads and loads of fire type obstacles. The first section is basically the entrance to the level so it's fairly short. The second section was kind of influenced by one of the ghost houses of SMW at least in terms of design. I actually wanted to use more of those reflecting fireballs but a lot of the times I seem to skip out on building the level around them. The third section is where the level really starts to pick up on the difficulty as it has a lot of Bowser Statues as well as hopping flames, which are usually pretty annoying to deal with. Last but not least is the rising lava section which is basically ending the level off. This was also my first time actually using that level mode, which I actually kind of like. It really helps being able to see the path still instead of it all being covered up by the lava.
Overall I'm quite satisfied with how the level turned out as it pretty much turned out how wanted it to. I've actually spent a lot of time trying to come up with the background palette for the level. At first it was kind of too dull and not really doing anything for the level. (Then again, grey usually doesn't too much.) So I decided to make the level look more intense by making the background have palette animation, to make it really seem like you're in a fiery castle. Things pretty much ran smoothly from there.......at least as smooth as working with the castle graphics can go. There's still a few things I need to fix such as glitch lava graphics in the second section of the level and probably a few questionable enemy placements here and there.
Comments and feedback are always and really appreciated as I'm interested in hearing your thoughts!
