SO MANY RPGs! Initial Reactions to the June 2024 Nintendo Direct
As expected, Nintendo held one of their annual Direct press conferences in June of 2024, focusing on new software coming to the Nintendo Switch platform. I was eagerly hoping that we would see new games coming for the system, maybe a hint of something for Metroid Prime 4, and maybe even a slight hint at information for the Nintendo Switch 2, or the Switch successor. We got information on a ton of games, a ton of role-playing games. After the broadcast I was left wondering what there was for me, and there wasn't much. But let's take a look at a few highlights from me and my initial reactions to the June 2024 Nintendo Direct. (spoiler: there were so many RPGs!)
Disney's Illusion Island free DLC
I actually really enjoy Disney's Illusion Island. I think it is a great little action platformer in the Mickey Mouse universe. I think the music is great, the animation is decent, and overall it's pretty fun. I was glad and a bit surprised to hear them announced that there would be new free DLC coming for the game, something I will be looking forward to.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
So for the first time ever we're going to get a game where you get to play as Princess Zelda in Hyrule, something I think makes sense, especially after the success of Princess Peach Showtime. Set in the same sort of universe as Link's Awakening, the animation style looks virtually identical. I would assume it probably uses the same engine. I've still yet to crack the seal on my copy of the HD remake of Link's Awakening, so for right now I'm not going to pre-order this but it looks interesting.
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
They showed a little bit more footage on this previously announced title, I may get it, I'm not entirely sure.
Looney Tunes: Wacky World of Sports
I love the look of this game, but I don't love the concept of this game. This looks like it's from the same company that made the Bluey and Peppa Pig games, and that doesn't give me the most confidence. It could be good, but I will probably pass on it.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure
It's often talked about how the predictions on the Simpsons have come to be reality, well South Park predicted Hello Kitty Island Adventure in the episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft". Instead of Warcraft, Butters is playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure, and now it is really coming to the Switch. I'm not buying it, but I can appreciate the irony.
Nintendo Switch Sports: Basketball DLC
I haven't played Nintendo Switch Sports as much as I thought I would, but I am glad to hear that they are not abandoning the title. They announced a new DLC for Nintendo Switch Sports which would be basketball, it could be fun.
Mario and Luigi: Brothership
A continuation of the Mario and Luigi series from the Game Boy Advance, this is not something that I have any interest in. I've never played any games in the series, I hate turn-based RPGs, and the fact that this is a cell-shaded game I hate that look.
Nintendo Switch Online Games
Four new games were announced for the expansion pack, the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Four Swords, Metroid Zero Mission, Perfect Dark, and Turok. I don't remember ever playing Zero Mission so for me out of these titles that's probably the one I am most looking forward to. Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game of all time so I may play that as well.
Mario Party Jamboree
I've just never been into the Mario Party games. Part of it is I never really have anyone else to play with and since it is a party-style game I really don't have much interest in it. It might be good for some, but for me, not so much.
Marvel vs Capcom Collection
I'm honestly surprised that this has not been released previously but the Marvel versus Capcom fighting collection arcade classics include seven different games that look fantastic. You get games like The Punisher, X-Men Children of the Atom, Marvel Superheroes, and more. While not the biggest fighting genre fan, I still may pick this up.
What did you think of today's Nintendo Direct? Are there any games you're looking forward to? Let me know in the comments.
