The Most OVERRATED Puzzle Game Of ALL TIME? DR. Mario | Tetris | Columns
35One of the things that has defined video gaming over the years is the puzzle game genre. There have been so many amazing entries into this field that it is hard to keep track of them, but three of the most popular of all time are the original Tetris, either Tengen or Nintendo, Dr. Mario, and Columns. But we're going to force your hand to pick which is the greatest out of these three, which is mid, and which is most overrated. Let's get started!
Music:
All three games have great music, although Columns' music is more atmospheric than Tetris or Dr. Mario. You can't say a bad thing about any of their soundtracks, so which is simply the most excellent? For me, it has to be Tetris. I still hear the Tetris music when trying to arrange items into a tight space, like when loading my car. Dr. Mario is definitely better than Columns, but not as good as Tetris.
Challenge
Again, the challenge on all 3 of these is terrific, but I think the game mechanics of Columns makes it unenjoyable to play. Compared to Dr. Mario and Tetris which feels rewarding, I never got that with Columns. Now I do think that both Tetris and Dr Mario are amazing and the challenge is fantastic. I can't choose between the two, the challenge is different but still enjoyable, so it's a tie!
Fun Factor
I don't think Columns is fun, I'll put that out there right now. Both Tetris and Dr Mario have an amazing level of fun and frustration factor, but I do find Tetris to be more rewarding to play, and therefore more fun. When the speed really ramps up in Tetris it is just a rush, whereas Dr Mario feels like a collection of mini-games with each level. There are levels in Tetris, but it never stops to change. You get higher, and faster, and more difficult. I find this amazingly rewarding and fun!
The Most Overrated:
Columns is the most overrated out of these three, and for me, it's not even close. Sega tried to develop something for the Master System, Genesis, and Game Gear to combat the juggernaut that was Tetris on the Game Boy and NES and I think they failed miserably. Even Nintendo didn't equal Tetris with their own entry, Dr. Mario, but at least it's fun. And Tetris, well it's the GOAT, and I don't think you can argue that.
