Sony made a bold, shocking move this week by buying Evolution Championship Series, aka Evo - the biggest fighting game event of the year. They joined forces with a new esports organisation known as RTS to make the purchase. Evo co-founders Tom and Tony Cannon plan to stay on as key advisors.
Evo was founded in 1996 as ""Battle of the Bay"", becoming "Evo" in 2002. It has since become a major attraction held in Las Vegas every year. Last year's Evo Online event was cancelled after co-founder and then-CEO Joey "Mr Wizard" Cuellar was embroilled in allegations of sexual misconduct. Cuellar is no longer affiliated with Evo. Plans for Evo Online 2021 in August are already underway, with games such as Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11 and Guilty Gear Strive already confirmed.
As Smash Bros has been a heavily featured series over the last decade of Evo, Nintendo also released a statement: “Nintendo has enjoyed engaging with fans at past Evo tournaments and wish the show organizers the best with their new venture. We will continue to assess Evo, and other opportunities, as we plan for future online and offline Super Smash Bros. tournament activity.” Evo business developer Mark Julio has stated that ""Evo is still open to all platforms.""
