SoulStar is a pseudo 3D space shooter developed by Core Design and released on the SegaCD in December of 1994.

The gameplay is similar to the previously released Super FX powered, Star Fox on the SNES but isn't rendered in a true 3D polygonal engine. Instead it takes advantage of the 2D Scaling and Rotation hardware inside the SegaCD to dish up some seriously fast and smooth pseudo 3D graphics . The game looks amazing and is easily one of the best looking SegaCD games I've ever seen. But it doesn't just look great, it plays great too. The graphics are as fast and smooth as they come and unlike Star Fox there are some levels in this game that give you full 360 degree control over the ship.

This game was one pleasant surprise and is definitely a must have for the SegaCD. It's one of the rare gems on the system that make use of the extra scaling and rotation hardware instead of relying on the FMV abilities to make a game. I would say this is another game that makes owning the system worthwhile since it's not only a great 3D space shooter but it's also exclusive to the SegaCD.
