Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers was another game in the Street Fighter II series released in the Arcades in 1993 and to the SNES and Genesis in 1994.

I've already shown the SNES version so I just wanted to show the Genesis version for anyone who hasn't seen it or perhaps didn't realize it was also on the Genesis at all.

Overall it's not a horrible port by any means but it's not perfect. The Graphics are good for the Genesis and while not quite as good as the SNES version it still holds up surprisingly well. The problem is that a lot of people don't care for the 4 new characters and on the Genesis specifically the earlier release of Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition (SCE) might actually be a better port. Many prefer the color pallet used in SCE as the pallet used here in the altered levels don't suite the Genesis hardware as well. Although I haven't done a side by side comparison I also know a lot of Genesis fans prefer the music in SCE as well.

When it comes down to it I tend to agree. I'm not a huge fan of the 4 new characters or the levels that come with them. I think some of the levels on SCE looked better than the new versions here with the remixed color pallets. It's possible the music does sound better on SCE but the voice samples (while they don't sound as good as the SNES version) may sound better here. Even if the sound's a toss up I would still say if I could only buy 1 of the 2 Street Fighter II games on the Genesis it would be SCE and not this. The fact that SCE is cheaper and easier to find is a bonus that seals the deal.

This isn't a bad game on its own terms. If you like the 4 extra characters and levels than it's a fine SFII game on the Genesis. But the fact is the SNES version is a better port and even it falls hard in comparison to the Arcade version. While if you compare SCE to Turbo on the SNES and those to the Arcade you would have much closer competition.

I've heard Sega themselves helped Capcom with the SCE port, while Capcom did this one alone. Perhaps this is true and would explain why some things like the music are considered to be better on the older SCE port.

Anyway, what do you guys think? If you could only have 1 of these 2 SFII games on the Genesis what one would you rather have?
