The first Star Trek series originally aired in 1966 and was a groundbreaking television show for it's time. 25 years later in 1991 the original series celebrates its 25th anniversary. There were a lot of collectables and new merchandise released at this time including a few video games. I suppose it was a little late but in February of 1992 Ultra Games released Star Trek 25th Anniversary for the NES.

Developed by Interplay, Star Trek 25th Anniversary is an adventure style game mainly played in a top down view similar to many RPG's of the time. You play as Capt James T Kirk and 2 other members of your choice to help you on your quest. The other members will follow Kirk around and depending on the members you choose for a mission can help in different ways by offering physical help or giving tips or suggestions. Sometimes you may be required to have certain members with you, other times they'll just help with tips but may not be required. The game will have many puzzles requiring certain items to be obtained and used in the correct areas. Most of the game is played wandering around the different planets surfaces gathering info and items. Sometimes you're required to use your phasers but they don't usually effect other non-playable characters. This is because there is always a correct way to get around enemies or obtain information or items you need from them without simply shooting them. You will have to explore many different planets with the ultimate goal to find the dilithium crystals you need to return home.

The game is a love it or hate it affair. When you know what to do the game is rather short but chances are you'll spend hours wandering around the various planets trying to figure out what to do for your first time. But most of the time when you find planets with inhabitants you're on the right track. I would say if you like these type of adventure games and you like the original Star Trek series you'll probably love this game as I do. Luckily despite being a little harder to find in the wild the game is dirt cheap. I've seen many copies on EBAY for less than 10 bucks.
