South of Midnight | Full Game Walkthrough | No Commentary
1092025 has thus far been a great year for games and the releases just keep on coming! South of Midnight is the latest project by the talented Compulsion Games who brought us the awesome We Happy Few which I have archived on this channel in the past. They always have games with unique settings and South of Midnight is no different.
We now get to explore a setting in the Bayou of Louisiana. It is a setting we do not see in video games often and one that I really adore. We play as Hazel who sees her home and mother being flushed away during a terrible storm. Now it is up to us to reunite the two while meeting all kinds of mystical creatures and figures. By the use of magic weapons we delve into the history and memories of different characters that are at the center of Southern folklore and fairy tales.
This is clearly an homage to the culture of the Deep South and you can feel that with everything. From the art style and architecture to the music which compliments the game perfectly. It even has sections where the music narrates the characters and bosses that you are facing.
In terms of gameplay it plays like an action adventure where you do plenty of climbing and parkour while also partaking in melee combat with various enemies. The gameplay plays it a bit safe, but there are plenty of sections that you can freely explore to find secrets and collectibles and there are different sections that offer some varied mechanics.
I do think the game sometimes got a bit repetitive with offering the same objectives of finding 4 memories to solve the next chapter over and over again. The real star of South of Midnight is the world and its atmosphere and the game really shines when you get to explore it rather than fighting the same enemies. Compulsion Games continue to demonstrate that they delvier beautiful and unique games and I cannot wait to see what their next project will be about.
