Stygian Outer Gods | Full Game Walkthrough | No Commentary
I am always interested in horror games that have Lovecraftian lore as its base. And thus I was so excited to find out that a new first person adventure was gonig to release this month. Stygian Outer Gods is a first person adventure that is beautifully crafted thanks to the Unreal Engine. We are sent over to the fishing village of Kingsport as we are lured over by a femme fatale. It does not take long before we see that things are amiss in this village as the inhabitants have all gone mad.
Through the adventure we are tasked with finding different relics and key items as we explore the village, forests and caves.
The real highlight of this game is its level design and different ways of playing. It very much is an RPG in that sense that you take on a role depending on the choices that you make that create your character.
You get to choose different perks and some bring huge changes to the game like the ability to lift heavy objects to find new areas you cannot access otherwise. Or the ability to speak with those who have deceased.
Even a stealth perk has huge consequences as you can notice enemies not hearing you at all while walking and skills like lockpicking are also important and can change things up.
There are often different ways and routes you can take to solve various situations and in that sense it reminded me of an indie version of Deus Ex which is one of my favorite series.
You can find different weapons, solve different puzles and have to do plenty of item management. There are multiple quests that offer great rewards and the exploration in this game is solid overall.
Now in its current state the game is still in early access and you do notice that in different parts. There are sections where there is no voice dialogue and thus there is a lot of silent reading, which is not as immersive.
I also felt that the usefulness of the speech skill is currently not very good at all. I hope to see these elements and mechanics be more flushed out with coming updates.
The game looks beautiful, the atmosphere is great and all it now needs is some more polish and a few updates and then I think Stygian can stand tall amongst the best Lovecraftian games that there are.
