Space Junkies | Impressions | Zero Gravity Arena Based Combat
36Space junkies is a great game, very well polished and certainly fits the arena shooter feel.
Gameplay is solid and feels good, the movement felt intuitive and more importantly I felt no sort of motion sickness or discomfort while playing. Its 4 player limit is a little on the low end but still manages to be fun and enjoyable over all. The game can be played sitting down or standing up as well. You can carry up to 2 guns and 2 gadgets, the gadgets you spawn with every life and include a laser sword, a medkit, emp, sonar, a lure, and a shield. After each round your rewarded XP and once you advance a level you get a free lootbox for a cosmetic item such as a profile banner or hat for your character.
The beta featured 6 maps, 7 weapons and 15 characters. The maps were small arenas that were unique enough to stand out, the weapons range from typical pistols to more unique weapons like the slingshot that shoots explosive grenades that blow up on contact. Characters all had unique stats to suit your play style best as well. Game modes are typical arena style modes such as FFA, TDM, Duel, and King where you have to stay alive with the crown as long as possible. The game features crossplay as well as comfort options and graphical settings.
Visually the game looks fantastic and polished. The UI was easy and intuitive, the color coded guns made distinguishing guns from far away very easy. Environments looked great and different from one another as well. Characters were also designed well and seem to be fairly distinguished from one another. The game also includes a nice view for those spectating on screen that shows the games leader board too
Overall I loved my time with the beta but I couldn't help but feel it needed more players and hopefully more maps, modes and guns as well if not, its not an easy sale at 39.99. I did ask someone at Ubisoft if there was going to be more content upon launch but they were unable to answer yes or no but did mention that there will be a patch on day 1. Ubisoft has also stated they plan to regularly add all sorts of new content throughout but if the beta represents everything you get at launch I feel the asking price is a little on the high end. That being said i will be picking it up as i did really enjoy my time with the game and hope to see more big publishers try out making games in VR.
