Splatoon 2: From sucking to saving in League Tower Control [13(2)-8, Grim Range Blaster]
I generally find myself to be the weakest link in our League squads, which is pretty cool in that I have some really good squidmates to battle alongside. It does also mean, however, that I tend to do badly at their level. My frustration when this happens is not helped when I am trying my best to do the right thing, but am thwarted by superior skill, or a touch of latency. The start of this battle is a good example, where I spot the inkling coming around to flank us, but can do nothing about it, despite my best efforts. It pretty much sets the tone for most of the battle, sadly.
I tidy up the blue mess left behind, use cover to stay safe, and launch some Tenta Missiles, but the quickness of the Splattershot, against the sluggish firing of my Grim Range Blaster, combines with my lacklustre aim to get me splatted too easily a second time. I try a different route back. Our turf control looks good as I move up, but clearly things are turned around before I get to the battle, and dropping down in to what I think will be favourable turf just lands me amongst the blue team looking to press another advantage.
My terrible performance so far leads to me needing to pick up my controller, causing a moment of disorientation. I get back out there, but my aim simply isn't good enough still. A partial blast is something, but hitting the container and then the Tower's column does nothing, although I am rather disappointed that I get not so much as a graze against the Splat Roller in front of me. I am feeling thoroughly useless by this point, and not really willing to move forwards. Having my squidmates splat the blue team encourages me to ride the Tower a little, but even hopping off when it gets targeted doesn't keep me safe from the Splattershot being in just the right place all the time.
I am not having any fun at all. I don't even want to try to splat the Inkjet, because I know it will just splat me, with the unerring accuracy that only inklings other than me can achieve with it. I just hide instead, somewhat defensively, and still all I can hit is the Tower's column. I take some thrill in hunting down the Sting Ray and getting a direct hit, which perks me up enough to get another direct hit on the Splash-o-matic as we surprise each other. The Splattershot is even kept away from me, thanks to a squidmate. I carry on to get a few more splats, establishing myself as a threat at last, before the Splattershot splats me with the usual efficiency.
Newly spurred on, I super-jump back to the fray, and head around the side to try to apply some pressure. I'm not entirely convinced I was close enough to that Splat Bomb, but so it goes. Another super-jump, and this time I'm splatted on landing. Maybe that small burst of competence was just that, a small burst. My motivation has gone again and I have to take a moment. I started doing well, then just leapt forwards, not taking my weapon's strengths in to account. I need to recalibrate.
Sidling back to the battle and spotting the Splat Charger as a target gets a nice direct hit, and backing off quickly keeps me out of trouble, this time the Splattershot rushing forwards getting them splatted needlessly. I also get my Burst Bombs working with the Blaster, getting a third splat the way Sheldon intended. This is much better already. I tidy up some mess as my squidmates ride the Tower, which helps charge more Tenta Missiles. Those let me know where the blue team are, which helps me stall the Tower's retreat without putting me in much danger.
My squidmates do most of the splatting, but I get one too. That leaves the Tower clear to ride for a moment, although the Splat Charger appears from the side to threaten us. My squidmate takes one for the team, giving me a window to splat the charger, and the Splat Roller's flick makes its approach nice and obvious, our combined inkpower splatting them before they get close. And from there, it's just another couple of steps before we take the lead, and an unexpected victory in extra time. Woomy!
