Not long after the New Season Challenge was “Dualies at Ten Paces,” a Challenge in which you can only use Dualies. This is probably my third worst weapon class, after Chargers and Stringers (which means this is my worst weapon class that isn’t strictly long-range and one that doesn’t involve charging shots), but you know what? I didn’t care; I just wanted the Shell-Out Token.

This took place on a Wednesday and a Thursday. I typically have things to do until about 8:30 PM or so, Pacific Daylight Time, so I went for the second session. Incidentally, Daylight Savings 2024 began in the United States on the following weekend, so this will be the last original Challenge set at even-numbered hours for me:
March 6th, 2024: 6 PM to 8 PM, 10 PM to midnight
March 7th, 2024: 2 AM to 4 AM, 6 AM to 8 AM, 10 AM to noon, 2 PM to 4 PM

I went over the Dualies I had, and I decided on the Dualie Squelchers due to it being the one that’s least centralized around dodge-rolling. This is something I can’t do instinctively, and even when I have to think about it to do it, I can’t quite react quickly enough or anticipate when best to do it. Hence, you won’t see a lot of rolling from me, and what little rolling happens will probably look random and spontaneous.

00:33 - Match #1
Mahi-Mahi Resort
Splat Zones (Dualies at Ten Paces)
Dualie Squelchers
Color Scheme: Blueberry Lemonade
Song: “No Plan Survives” by Riot Act
Octolings: 3
This was my first match of this Challenge and the first time in Splatoon 3 I’m using the Dualie Squelchers. I used them in Splatoon 2, but it’s been quite some years. But I think I started getting a good feel of this match and of my opponents somewhere in the middle of this match. The Wave Breakers really help by softening up the opponents—remember that dodge-rolling won’t let you evade a shockwave from a Wave Breaker!

06:37 - Match #2
Mahi-Mahi Resort
Splat Zones (Dualies at Ten Paces)
Dualie Squelchers
Color Scheme: Jam & Marmalade
Song: “Damp Socks” by Damp Socks feat. Off the Hook
Octolings: 6
You know, now that Side Order is out and we get more insight into Pearl and Marina, we STILL don’t know who “Damp Socks” are (or is). Is it yet another pen name of Acht’s? In any case, due to the timing of this Challenge, we have a lot of people using Douser Dualies FF, and it’s pretty evident in this match when you see three of the four opponents using them. The thing is that the Douser Dualies FF is an advanced weapon, with complicated mechanics you have to exploit to keep up with simpler weapons. While they put us under a lot of pressure, I think six days is not enough time to get an edge over weapons that have been around for far longer. ALl those Triple Splashdowns got really annoying though.

09:58 - Match #3
Inkblot Art Academy
Splat Zones (Dualies at Ten Paces)
Dualie Squelchers
Color Scheme: Wario
Song: “No Plan Survives” by Riot Act
Octolings: 3
As a matter of fact, this was the only time this whole session that I got a match in Inkblot Art Academy, not including one I chose not to include because someone got disconnected. I suppose even now, sometimes you just have the game heavily favoring one stage over another. Unlike Mahi-Mahi Resort, Inkblot Art Academy has that big structure in the middle that’s great for long-range weapons. I don’t know if you’d consider the Dualie Squelchers a long-range weapon, but it’s one of the longest-ranged options available in this Challenge, as the Dualies are mostly a short-range bunch.

12:14 - Match #4
Mahi-Mahi Resort
Splat Zones (Dualies at Ten Paces)
Dualie Squelchers
Color Scheme: Wario
Song: “Splattack!” by C-Side
Octolings: 6
I love the Wave Breaker. It’s why I ultimately chose the original Dualie Squelchers. The Wave Breaker is my favorite special weapon. But you know what’s even better than a Wave Breaker? Two Wave Breakers! I had two teammates with the Dualie Squelchers and just as eager to place Wave Breakers on the Splat Zone as I was. When I saw that, I put in my own. If you’ve played or even watched a lot fo Salmon Run, you’ll know how difficult it is to hop over all those shockwaves when multiple Big Shots show up. Well, that’s the case here too.

17:27 - Match #5
Mahi-Mahi Resort
Splat Zones (Dualies at Ten Paces)
Dualie Squelchers
Color Scheme: Blueberry Lemonade
Song: “Candy-Coated Rocks” by Damp Socks feat. Off the Hook
Octolings: 4
You know, I realized that despite “Candy-Coated Rocks” being around since the start, I rarely have any matches I choose for a Splatoon 3 video using this song. I suppose it’s just dumb luck. As for the match, I didn’t do quite as much fighting as I did in the other four matches in this video. But I didn’t need to: my main task this time around was to protect the Splat Zone and chase away intruders, or at least give them a hard time. To that end, two of my medals at the end were #1 Splat Zone Inker and #1 Splat Zone Guard. I’ll let my teammates do the fighting if they’re better at it than I am.
