Happy Mario Day! This is not something I always remember, and as a result, I haven’t put up something Mario-related each year. Of course, a few years ago, I did settle onto a schedule of two weeks having Pokémon battle videos through the weekdays, so if March 10 happened to fall on there, there’d be no reason for me to do it. As it seems, I have a Super Mario Maker 2 video in the pipeline, and now is as good a time as any to show it. As always, here are the rules:

1. Maximum 5 courses per person at a time. Once I've put up all of them, you can send me more.

2. I will accept Course IDs only with the course's name and vice versa. No bare IDs and no bare names. I want to make sure I have the right one.

3. My player ID is KJ8-PD8-F9G, and I go by Puppycorn.

4. Do not send someone else's course. Courses you've obtained from others and modified yourself are fine, as long as the modifications are substantial.

These are five more courses from the prolific Barrysun. I still have only…11 courses, I think. Maybe ten and a half, because one has remained unfinished for at least three years. Just like with WarioWare D.I.Y. and Game Builder Garage, I’m more interested in playing other people’s courses than making my own.

00:00 - jungle rush (night)
by Barrysun
Course ID: YP2-2DH-BKG
Clear Rate: 19/421, 4.51% (Expert)
“Run through the night version of the jungle.“
I didn’t know that the Dry Bones Shell also protects you from the rising toxic sludge. Without that knowledge, much of this course instead feels like navigating a flurry of bone-shaped bullets while having your movements severely hampered. That being said, even with that knowledge, there are WAY too many obstacles onscreen, especially Podoboos that leap out based on where the player is expected to be. Enemy spam is a cheap way to increase the challenge in a course. (There is a Dry Bones Shell located near the start too. It’s a lot more manageable with it on, but there are so many things in this course that can knock it away.)

05:23 - 1-1 Remix pt2
by Barrysun
Course ID: L13-HN3-R4G
Clear Rate: 236/484, 48.76% (Easy)
“a remix of 3 Mario levels“
Of those “3 Mario levels,” I recognize Super Mario Bros. 3, but I’m not sure about the other ones. Or are they all from Super Mario Bros. 3? I had just played the first stage of Super Mario World on Nintendo Switch Online because I wanted to get the Switch profile icons, and certainly, I don’t remember any of those on there.

07:16 - Shoot'em up in the castle
by Barrysun
Course ID: C8D-JJW-VMG
Clear Rate: 9/102, 8.82% (Expert)
“Take on this shoot’em up battle“
Condition: Defeat all 1 (1) Bowser.
While I get the idea about what to do here from the start, this is very close to “Bowser in a Box” in design. There is a lot of padding in the form of at least three Koopalings (Larry, Roy, Wendy), then Bowser Jr., then Bowser. It kills the pacing and makes it much too long, especially since the timer was reduced to 300 seconds from its default 500 seconds. It's too little time! Look at how close I cut it.

12:46 - climb the tower pt1
by Barrysun
Course ID: 34X-GKH-TRG
Clear Rate: 44/466, 9.44% (Expert)
“Clear each room inorder (sic) to get to the next area.“
The first half of this course is great! It’s a series of challenges of scaling upwards or downwards, with a variety of different challenges, though one of them is a leap of faith…at least, unless I’m interpreting it correctly and that the Coins indicate safe locations to drop down. The second half, the stuff after the Checkpoint Flag, is a mess. It dispenses with the “tower” motif of the course with finding the key in a flurry of agile enemies, then throws Boom Boom and Bowser Jr. at you in one room. Then, a room of Coins looks like it's over, but it actually takes you to another leap-of-faith room (this time with bottomless pits at the beginning), then another room with Bowser Jr., but now accompanied by big Bowser. Like the previous course, the timer is set to 300 seconds instead of 500, even though this one is even longer. Why do this?

21:42 - Changebit adventure (Super Mario bros U style)
by Barrysun
Course ID: 2LB-4BH-QNG
Clear Rate: 22/101, 10.94% (Normal)
“Play the Super Mario brothers (sic) U version of this level.“
Barrysun gave me the option to play this in any of the game styles except Super Mario 3D World, so I chose NSMBU because I don’t think I’ve seen a course from Barrysun in the NSMBU style. I want to point out that you can get softlocked in the first underground room, as I'll demonstrate. There is also another Bowser Jr. and (Winged) Boom Boom in one room, followed by Big Bowser in another. Please, stop it with all of these bosses. I was getting very tired of seeing Bowser, Bowser Jr., and the other boss characters by this point.
