Of course Liquid Sunshine comes out the day I finish this one. Nintendo just won't let me have a break huh? Probably gonna tackle another Splatband song or two before I get to that one tbh :p

Something that I feel like doesn't get talked about much is just how deeply hurtful losing the final Splatfest was implied to be for Callie. You don't just disappear on a family member, especially one who you practically treat as your sister, without feeling like you really had a reason to. [Woop woop! Headcanon alert!] Callie's insecurity didn't start back when she lost the Splatfest; it couldn't have.

During Callie's formative years, her parents put a lot of pressure on her to always be the best, and she never felt like she could meet those expectations. As she became a teenager, her parents tempered their treatment of her (adults can grow emotionally, too!), but she still kept her expectations high for herself. She inflated the part of her personality—her positivity and outgoingness—that had always gotten her praise, and essentially became two different people: Callie of The Squid Sisters and Callie offstage. The way she valued her entire public life became fixed solely to how much it seemed people liked her, and so much so that offstage Callie started to disappear.

In the last few months before the final Splatfest, Callie started to resent Marie. Everything seemed so easy for her, so why couldn't it be for Callie? She had become bitter about who she was and how little she thought she was valued, and being angry toward Marie just became an outlet. The Splatfest alone didn't do it. It was just the last straw.

At first it was cathartic, being alone. Callie left without saying a word, and got herself "kidnapped" by the Octarians almost to prove to herself that her anger was justified and that Marie wouldn't care enough to come and find her. When she did, Callie's anger melted away first into relief and joy, and then into a crippling guilt. She had grown to hate her cousin, and for what? Even after her return, she felt like she was taking advantage of Marie's forgiveness. She felt weak.

Over the past five years, Callie and Marie have been working through that trauma, and Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today is filled with the forgiving words that Marie had given to Callie along the way: "Just know, you have the means to live on. You've got me, I've got you, and together we are strong." Callie wrote this song as a celebration of her own progress toward forgiving herself, and also in appreciation of Marie's help and acceptance. The road toward being better is long, but you will look back on it with fondness for where it has brought you.

...I almost feel like I should just be writing Splatoon fanfic at this point lolllll. Hope you guys enjoy!
