StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void - The State of the Ravager! (4K Game Analysis)
436Ravagers are one of the new Zerg units in the StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void beta. The unit morphs off of a Roach and costs a total of 100 Minerals and 100 Gas.
While the Ravager does have more movement speed than a Roach, and also have a cool ability called Corrosive Bile that can deal area of effect splash damage and break forcefields, it also has less hitpoints than a Roach and is therefore kind of squishy. On top of that, the unit model is much bigger than the Roach and they are three supply each rather than two.
In all three match-ups I feel that the Ravager doesn't really have a good place. Early game they are reasonable, but because of their low hitpoint count and their low damage, it feels like in most situations you're better off with more Roaches or even Zerglings and Banelings.
In the middle part of the game, the unit almost completely fades away, as Roaches are more effective in big Zerg versus Zerg battles (because of the unit size), and a little later Hydralisks have more use than Ravagers as well.
In the late game, the three supply of the unit is not a great moment either, as it does not allow you to get a very high tech army up at all and your army will remain relatively small if it's based around the Ravager.
All in all Ravagers are not bad, but they're not great either. I'm hoping to see a change to them soon so they will be more useful in the Legacy of the Void beta.
