Ever just want to take a group of spaceships, drop them off in some remote part of the galaxy, and just do whatever you want? That's pretty much the premise of Starsector, a game that places you in the calm after a massive Human-AI war that is on the verge of getting hot once again. In this game you take a group of ships from planet to planet, working the economy through trades and building up your skills in ship to ship combat. There's a lot to do and a lot to see, especially once you get out of the pseudo-preset core systems and work your way out into the procedural generated star systems. You can loot derelicts for treasure, get crushed by black holes, or even try to build your own colony. The freedom is yours.

It has been a little while since I've played this one (which shows in my multiple times forgetting how skill point assignments work), but those things are easy enough to hash out. If this is selected for viewer's choice, you can look forward to many other mistakes -- especially ones that can't be fixed by quick-reload.

Note that this game is NOT available on Steam (yet). But even so, it is more than well worth your time.
