Street Fighter, 1987 Capcom
The VERY FIRST Street Fighter game! You don't get to pick from a bunch of fighters to play through the game as; just Ryu (player 1) or Ken (player 2), and you can both play each other in simultaneous play mode. The game asks which mode you want to play in: Japan or USA, and this only determines the order of opponents you will face. Fans of Street Fighter II will no doubt be confused and disappointed with the controls: the buttons and joystick from SFII are here as well (3 varying strength punch buttons and 3 varying strength kick buttons-- though a special 2-button control panel exists as well). But note: to pull off special moves you must FIRST push the button, not the joystick! And you must do the joystick move REAL QUICK then let go of the button. Even doing that, the moves don't always work (in fact, most of the time it seems they don't). The moves for Ryu and Ken are the same here, but obviously much harder to pull off! Apart from that the game has very nice graphics and sound effects, and the music's not bad for 1987. Engrish and obvious Japanese announcers trying in vain to affect English accents make for some entertaining cheese. Some opponents from the Street Fighter series got their start here: Gen, Birdie, Adon and Sagat, with the latter 2 being the final 2 opponents of this game. You may think you're tough enough for this game, but don't forget there are many guys like you aww obah da waud!
