Tutankham, 1982 Konami/Stern
Graphically decent maze game with great sound effects and music (typical for a Konami game) but the challenge gets awfully stiff in parts-- particularly when you are waiting for enemies to stop materializing at some point when instead they come out in full force, one after another! You are an explorer trying to get to the treasures of the famed ancient Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun (misspelled in the game's title). King Tut gained some renewed popularity in the 70s with famous exhibitions of his treasures, and this game was probably riding its coattails. Enemies that attack you include snakes, bird, bats, jackals, parrots (I guess?) and some weird colored swastika thingy! The enemies generate from mostly recognizable spots in the maze, though sometimes out of thin air (in wide open spaces). Your express goal is to find the key or keys to open the door or doors to the treasure at the end of the maze. When a certain grinding noise plays, a cloud appears and the enemies emerge from this spot (there are several in the maze). Your explorer can fire only left and right with his pistol (looks more like a laser), so when moving up and down he is in trouble-- though a genie lamp (given only once per life) acts as a smart bomb and kills all enemies onscreen. Some of the enemies seem to sort of have a pattern-- sometimes they explore every single turn in a path-- but they never pass through each other. You'll often need to use "warp gates" to get the keys (and there are also sort of lucrative treasures with increasing bonuses for getting more and more of them in the maze), and you can only carry one key at a time; so get a key, open a door and come back for the next key (the first maze only has one key and the rest have more). If you don't remember if you have a key, you can kind of see it on your explorer if you move up and down. Very difficult game, but popular enough to make a secret appearance in TRACK & FIELD if you and player 2/CPU's time in the 100m dash is exactly the same!!
