STRIDE VR OCULUS QUEST 2 GAMEPLAY // VR Parkour Comes to The Quest // Mirrors Edge VR?
Why don't we have more VR parkour games?! Jumping across rooftops is pretty dangerous for a weird, untrained, beardy guy like me but parkour VR is completely safe and allows me to live out my Mirrors Edge VR fantasies in the comfort of my home. Last year Stride VR launched into early access on PC and managed to capture the rush & excitement of free running perfectly. Running, jumping, wall-running, sliding and grappling with a hookshot device all felt seamless & fluid but the cable of tethered VR stopped players from feeling truly free. As of today those cables have been severed and the Stride Oculus Quest 2 version has launched, letting standalone VR players hurl themselves across rooftops in three exciting modes (endless, time attack & arena) for a true taste of what a Mirrors Edge VR game could feel like!
Still in early access Stride has yet to realise it's full potential, a story driven campaign mode has been teased since launch and it's the one thing that I feel could tip Stride over from being a fun, fitness focused, quick play application into something far more substantial. The Stride Oculus Quest port isn't without it's improvements though, a brand new tutorial which teaches players the ropes in a focused and exciting makes for a much more professionally packaged experience. There have also been a slew of quality of life improvements and the newest mode, Arena, allows players to tackle a small open world section of city rooftops which is enough of a taster for the promised campaign mode to keep me happy for a few more months at least.
I have had my concerns in the past about Joy Way's ability to finish early access games and I'm still remaining cautious about future updates to Stride. The game certainly has the potential to capture a large audience on the Quest platform if the content can keep flowing and if the story mode makes an appearance at some point soon but with 4 or 5 VR projects all sitting in early access I do hope they aren't abandoned for the next shiny idea that captures the hearts & minds of the developers at Joy Way.
