Super Mario Bros. Print World (PC) Demonstration - NintendoComplete
A demonstration of Hi-Tech Expressions' 1991 printing application for PCs running MS-DOS, Super Mario Bros. Print World.
This is officially licensed, as you can see from the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality" on the front of the box. It's just like any number of other programs from the period featuring kid-friendly characters. It allows you to make cards, banners, calendars and signs with a set of assets provided on the disk, and then you can print them out in super-blurry gray print from your state-of-the-art dot-matrix printer! Wee! I remember quite well getting told to stop making calendars because the squealing of the printer would drive everyone absolutely crazy. That, and my sister had provided my mom about 700 versions of calendars for the same month already.
And after all that, the fun still isn't over! Then you get to pull off the feeder edges of the paper, hopefully not tearing what you just printed out. Woohoo! Does it get any more fun than this, people?!
I do recall this being something for sale at one of those Scholastic Book Fairs that we had in elementary school - you remember the ones where everyone would go to the library with an order form (and money, if you were lucky) to go buy Garfield comic books or Goosebump novels? I'd totally forgotten about those book fairs until I saw the box to this program again after so many years.
The game had no music at all originally - the only sound was the occasional PC speaker beep when printing. I cut that out and replaced it with the Mario theme song playing through a Sound Blaster. Might as well make it interesting!
I haven't seen really anything of note on Youtube about this, so I figured I'd put it up for the sake of documenting yet another forgotten about piece of software from yesteryear.
