Raiden (PS1) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Seibu Kaihatsu's 1990 arcade shooter Raiden, as it appears in The Raiden Project for the Sony Playstation (SCEA, 1995).
This video shows one loop played at the normal difficulty level. There is no ending - once the player returns to Earth the second loop begins immediately.
What an awesome launch title - it's too bad that it was so overshadowed by the big 3D games that kicked off the PS1, because both Raiden and Raiden II are arcade-perfect, limitations of a 4:3 crt notwithstanding. They also feature fantastic remix soundtracks that aren't Redbook, but are instead actually being synthesized by the PS1's "Sound Synthesizer", which is actually a hyper-diesel descendant of the Sony-designed SPC700, the SNES sound processor chip. It sounds great, and has enough of that tinny retro quality to make it feel right at home.
The game has a load of options for screen setup, so you could play it full-screen vertically if you had a 3:4 display like the "tall-screen" or "tatte" arcade games used.
Besides that, what can I say for Raiden that hasn't been said over and over again? It's a great game, and this is a nigh perfect port of it that destroys every other 90s port of the game out there.
