A playthrough of InScape's 1995 horror adventure game for PCs running Windows 3.1/95, The Dark Eye.

The Dark Eye isn't so much a game as it is an experience. It lacks the puzzles of similarly structured games like Myst, but once the story grabs you, you won't miss them. It features the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and through some incredibly disturbing and bizarre imagery puts together a plot that spans a few of his most famous works (The Tell-tale Heart, Berenice, The Mask of the Red Death, Annabelle Lee, and The Cask of Amontillado). Even cooler, especially for those that appreciate the literature, is how the game uses these stories to create a meta-narrative that draws a number of symbolic parallels to Poe's life. It's done very well, it's incredibly dark, and it'll have your attention in a vice-grip for the short while that it lasts.

The presentation in particular goes a long to selling the psychological horror at play. Even though the whole thing is built on Macromedia's Director, the Hollywood-produced character models are all hideously distorted humanoid forms done in stop-motion animation, and their pseudo-human appearances are beyond unsettling. The score is also excellent - it may not blind you with science, but Thomas Dolby's work on the soundtrack really complements, and is largely responsible for, the mood and tone striking all the right chords. Sorry, that was a terrible pun. I couldn't resist.

Anyway, it's the perfect game for this time of year. Just don't blame me if you can't sleep after watching it. I did warn you.
