Here's the original version of everybody's favorite classic boxing game, featuring Mike Tyson as the heavyweight champ and monster last boss, complete with gap tooth.
Punch-Out!! is one of those timeless games that always feels the same when you come back to it, but in a good way. Glass Joe is always amusingly glass jawed, Super Macho Man's moob flex is still nighmare fuel 29 years later, and Mike Tyson is just as savage as you remember him with his knockout punch - probably harder if your skills aren't quite up to par with the way you played when you were 8. Mine certainly aren't anymore :) I played this a few times again to refresh my memory on timings and things, but it seems that my playing has gotten sloppier over the years. Still, I think I put in a pretty good showing.
The "other" NES version of the game, the 1990 release Punch-Out!!, replaced Mike Tyson with a (merely tile swapped) new champ called Mr. Dream. Apparently the contract was about up, Tyson had gotten into the media's crosshairs with rape allegations, and Nintendo declined any extension of the contract. Probably a good move, given their image at the time. But since the NES game was, and still is, one of the best (and best-selling) NES games of it's time, it made sense for Nintendo to just change the character insteading to stopping production of the game completely.
