Levels:
Mario - lv. 2
Mallow - lv. 2
Mario's now caught up with Mallow in level. I decided to give him an HP boost on his level-up in the Croco fight, as that seemed like it would affect the tide of battles more, letting him survive and assist the party or deal damage, whichever happens to be most beneficial.
Claymorton sounds like a much better name for a commander of the Smithy Gang and keeper of the first star, that's for sure.
The boss has 480 HP and is accompanied by four bodyguards with 30 HP each. The boss resummons all four when they've been wiped out. Unique to the Switch remake of the game, Claymorton will jump into the air, refusing to come back down before his allies have been eliminated (or maybe I just haven't waited long enough). This renders the previously optimal strategy of leaving just one single bodyguard alive futile; however, it is not a hassle in the slightest to 2HKO them all with Thunderbolt while Mario keeps Jumping the main boss for the best damage possible.
I get lucky with a Power Mushroom proc at the very start, making Mario hit extra hard, so I only end up having to take out two waves of bodyguards. Do note that taking out more of them does not cause you to gain any additional experience when the battle is over. I use a Honey Syrup to allow my party to function fully. It is really not worth restarting the fight for a freebie proc, considering that both coins and frog coins are farmable ad infinitum after the boss that follows this one and you can afford to buy any coveted items you could lay your eyes on.
Most of the attacks here are blockable, though the boss does have an MT Flame Wall ability that's unblockable which could put your party in a risky situation.
