Super Metroid: Subversion - 100% Normal speedrun in 2:22:19 (World Record)
I finally had time to complete a decent run. This is one of the best Super Metroid romhacks overall and it's been really fun to pick apart the game.
A new trick specific to Subversion was found recently by cakemaphoneige called gravity supersink. This makes use of two very niche tricks from vanilla, supersink and slopekiller, as well as the Gravity Boots item from this hack. It basically lets you clip through any amount of floor as long as you can get slopekiller. This opens up a lot of possibilities, like skipping Phantoon by backdooring Varia, delaying Dark Visor (which I personally have chosen not to do), and full clearing Life Temple by getting the Garden Canal ammo without Power Bombs (this one is a softlock risk and requires careful maneuvers to clip back out). Dark Visor + Phantoon skip is an even bigger break for any%.
Everyone has been using different 100% routes and it's very hard to tell which ones are better. I get Ice Beam before Power Bombs which is not what most people do in this category. Sub 2:20 should be possible with my route though.
So to explain the new trick, the concept of supersink is to bypass the normal fall speed cap of 5 pixels per frame, which in vanilla is doable by canceling a sharp downward grapple swing and doing enough consecutive wiggles to build up speed before hard landing. This is not a very applicable or accessible trick with these constraints.
Slopekiller is a glitch that stores your vertical speed if you land by doing a pixel-perfect unmorph. It is named such because it causes Samus to travel at full speed on slopes, rather than being subject to their normal speed reduction. It's the stored vertical speed we're interested in here though. By doing angle turnarounds, you can increment your stored fall speed, but you're still subject to the fall speed cap... which is where Gravity Boots come in.
TN578's gravity without the boots actually has a different fall speed cap, of 6 pixels per frame, so by unequipping Gravity Boots, wiggling to reach the new fall speed cap of 6, and then re-equipping them, you have achieved a supersink by bypassing the cap of 5 while the boots are on.
This is a much more accessible way to supersink as long as there is a reasonable setup to achieve slopekiller. It's a pixel-perfect unmorph, so it's only possible when falling from certain intervals, and frame-perfect even when it is possible. Luckily we have some very convenient setups with Hi-Jump, either doing a full jump and morph, or spring balling into a 4-tile high ceiling (door/tube height). Getting force crouched is also technically a free slopekiller, so that makes a few of them very easy.
