Desert Commander - NES - First Battle - (1988) - Nintendo - Strategy - Retro Nostalgia
4Today we are looking at the First Battle in the game Desert Commander for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Released in 1988.
This is possibly the first strategy game I played in my life. I remember playing it at a friend's and having no idea what I was doing, but the stat screens and little fight scenes just fascinated me.
This is the first time I've played this since the mid 90's maybe. Now that I'm older and know what I'm doing I think this game is a blast. Even today my favorite genre is turn based strategy games, I may owe it all to this game.
I did a little dry run on the first mission(which the game calls "First Battle") before I recorded the one you see in this video, mainly to figure out the controls. I know it may look like I know what I'm doing when I'm adding and subtracting different units at the start but I really don't, I just know I didn't use the transport at all in my dry run and one Supply truck seemed to be plenty for this mission.
I'm sure this one isn't as entertaining to watch as some other games but it's really fun to play if you are into the genre. Its a lot like the Panzer General series which I also love.
The only complaints I have are the repetitive music(which I later found you can change to 3 other songs by pushing select) and the supply trucks are a little too strong I think. In my dry run my fighters and tanks were nearly wiped out by supply trucks lol. I figured out there is actually a map view if you press Start, I have no idea why I didn't think of this.
I didn't notice until after I recorded but the title screen has a tiny bit cut off at the bottom, idk why my recording did that but I'll get it figured out for next time.
Anyway, I think this game is rad and you might as well if you like old strategy games.
